Exhaust manifold heatshield procedure

The exhaust manifold (or rather one of the two motor mounts) on a 944 turbo is protected by a heatshield (part number 95110705301) that sits just under the exhaust manifold pipes. This shield looks like it is one part, but it consists of three parts: 1) the part nearest to the oil filter, 2) the part to the left of the first part, and 3) the bracket that holds the second part to the block and allows to connect part 1 & 2 together. Removal of this heatshield and especially the replacement is quite difficult because of its design. Therefore, to make matters not worse, I strongly suggest performing this procedure during the exhaust manifold removal procedure, detailed here. Detailed hereunder is a step by step procedure to replace the heat shield.

Full procedure

  1. With the exhaust manifold removed (studs included), you can start removing the heatshield.

The heatshield will look like this. If you buy a completely new heatshield, it will look slightly different as Porsche updated the part.

  3. Grab your best penetrating oil and blast the three bolts in the middle of the shield, and the two under that connect the shield to the block. You may need to spray from under the car.
  4. You will remove the shield in two parts. To do so, take a 10mm ratchet wrench with a short extension (to clear the shield) and unbolt the three middle bolts so that the two parts of the shield separate from above.
  5. With the shields decoupled, take out the left part from above.
  6. Now take a 10mm ratchet wrench and unbolt the bracket that is connected to the block from above.
  7. With the left shield and its bracket out of the way, you can reach the bolt holding the right side of the shield to the block. To do so, go from above under the shield with a 10mm wrench to counterhold the right most bolt on the shield and loosen it.
  8. With the bolt removed, take out the right side of the shield. You'll see its bracket hanging on the block. Unbolt the bracket with a 10mm ratchet wrench from above.
  9. Congratulations! The shield is now out of the car.
  10. Unfortunately, the really hard part starts now. With your new shield in hand, you'll need to separate it too into three parts. Loosen and remove all 10mm bolts with a ratchet wrench.
  11. Take the right part that sits above the oil filter and turn it around. You'll notice it has a small bracket on the back. This bracket needs to align with the hole in the block, but to do so, you'll have to rotate it downwards and feel for the hole to start the bolt by hand.
  12. I suggest to remove your gloves so that you can better feel the bolt and whether it is seated correctly in the bolt hole.
  13. Make sure you orient the shield in the correct way! You don't want to put this thing on backwards. The correct way is to keep the three holes in the shield as far away as possible from the oil filter.
  14. Image

Orient the shield like so with the bolt and its washer already in the bracket. Use your right hand's fingers to feel the bolt into its hole. Use your left hand to support the shield, and with one finger of the left hand, also support the bolt into the bolt hole. This will be the most difficult part. Work from above and stand on the passenger's side of the car. Alternatively, you can try standing in front of the car, this may work better for you.

  15. After a lot of swear words and a bit of luck, you'll have succeeded in starting the bolt in the hole.
  16. Be sure to thread the bolt into the block a good few threads by hand. Don't tighten it completely yet.
  17. With the shield still oriented down, take the bracket of the left part of the shield and connect it to its hole in the block.
  18. Important: if you have the updated shield, your bracket will have two holes. Be sure to put the bolt through the right most hole of the bracket. Otherwise the right part of the shield won't be aligned.
  19. Do not completely tighten the bracket to the block, but enough so that it keeps somewhat in position when working on connecting the shields.
  20. With the bracket quasi installed, rotate the right side of the heatshield upwards in its correct position. Use a wobblehead 10mm socket wrench with a short extension to tighten the bolt completely into the block.
  21. Image

With both the bracket and the right part of the shield quasi connected to the block, rotate them into place.

  22. With the right side secured, and the bracket relatively tight but still moveable, put the left side of the shield on the bracket. The left side sits above the right side and the bracket is below that.
  23. From above, put the first 10mm bolt through the two shield halves into the bracket. The first bolt should be the top most bolt as this is the one that is the most easy. You may have to press a bit on the shield to get the bolt to seat.
  24. From above, put the second 10mm bolt through the bracket and the two shield halves into the tacked on nut that sits on top of the shield. This second bolt should be the lowest bolt that is on the shield.
  25. From below, put the third 10mm bolt through the bracket and the two shield halves into the tacked on nut that sits in the middle of the shield. This will require small hands and a few swear words. You can try to use a socket on a long extension but I found it easiest to start the bolt by hand.
  26. With the bolt started, tighten it with a 10mm socket wrench on a long extension and a wobble head socket.
  27. Tighten all bolts with the same extended 10mm socket wrench.
  28. Congratulations! You've replaced the heatshield under the exhaust manifold!

The new shield should now be in place. Continue with the reinstallation of the exhaust headers.
